This is Joachim Schäfer’s eighth CD with Christophorus: the recording focuses on Johann Sebastian Bach, a composer who particularly devoted himself to the exploitation and extension of the trumpet’s technical and musical possibilities. Unfortunately, Bach did not compose any concertos for trumpet(s), but Schäfer has compensated for this lack by producing two skilful arrangements of Bach cantatas with virtuoso trumpet parts, thereby creating two new “Bach concertos” for three trumpets. Bach’s ubiquitous “Air” is a further highlight, performed by Joachim Schäfer and accompanied by the organist Matthias Eisenberg. Schäfer rounds off his programme with concertos and sonatas by Corelli and Albinoni and other Italian contemporaries of Johann Sebastian Bach.
