Pieces a trois violes par Monsieur Forcroy : Jean Baptiste Antoine Forqueray?: Lille, Archive dép. du Nord
Antoine Forqueray? Paris, BNF ms. Vm7 6296 (second viol arranged by Vittorio Ghielmi): Musette
Antoine Forqueray: Pieces de viole avec la Basse continue Paris, 1747: Deuxieme suite en Sol majeur Prelude en re mineur pour clavecin Paris, BNF ms. 40Y1 Quatrieme suite en sol mineur
Only few composers knew how to use all the scopes of a viola da gamba. But Antoin Forqueray (1672-1745) and his son Jean-Baptiste Antoine (1699-1782) knew how to do it. They seemed to be not only rivals, but today it is nearly impossible to distinguish the authorship of their music pieces. Although the attribution can never be clarified, the pieces are the best and especially technically most demanding what the repertoire has to offer at that time. Among the fingers of a virtuoso of the caliber of Vittorio Ghielmi the sophistication and elegance of these pieces still flourishes in addition to and conveys something of the expressive possibilities of the instrument. Recorded at the Deutschlandfunk Kammermusiksaal, Köln (Germany), on 17-19 May 2011
