This collection of 18th Century works for two harpsichords shows not only the weath of repertoire within an era but also of the differences between harpsichords. Devlieger and Penson, playing six first rate instruments in this recording make this clear in a very musical and non academic way. Warmly recommended!
Jan Devlieger was born in Ghent in 1967 and studied at the conservatory there, gaining his diplomas in harmony, counterpoint and fugue under W. Carron and for chamber music under M. Ketels. At the Hogeschool Gent he was awarded his master’s level in recorder under P. Peire and in harpsichord under C. Verhenneman. Jan Devlieger teaches recorder, harpsichord, chamber music, accompaniment and music theory at the Bruges conservatory and the music academies of Deinze and Geraardsbergen. He has also taught accompaniment at the Conservatory and Hogeschool Gent since 2008. As harpsichordist, organist, recorder player and singer he has performed with various ensembles in concert and for radio, TV and CD recordings. Jan Devlieger was harpsichord accompanist for the Musica Antiqua Brugge competition in 2002 and also co-ordinated the competition from 2005 to 2007. He is also a founding member of the baroque ensemble Les Gouts-Authentiques, of which Les Clavecins-Réunis and Les Cordes- Réunis are a part, and the Renaissance ensemble O Felici. Jan Devlieger also composes in the ancient style as well as writing programme notes and giving introductions to concerts in DeSingel in Antwerp.
Guy Penson was born in Ronse in 1958 and rapidly achieved recognition both in Belgium and abroad soon after concluding his training in piano and harpsichord. He was a prize-winner in various international competitions, including the prestigious Bruges harpsichord competition in 1980. He is in much demand as harpsichordist and is also a specialist in basso continuo work. He has performed with many renowned ensembles and orchestras for leading European music festivals in France, Holland, Scandinavia, Romania, Russia, Great Britain and Germany as well as in Canada, the USA and Japan. He appears in recital both as solo player and chamber musician; as pianist he is primarily active as a vocal accompanist. Guy Penson’s impressive list of recordings numbers more than one hundred CDs for such labels as Ricercar, Polydor, Vox Temporis, RGIP, Hyperion, Passacaille and Musique en Wallonie with the ensembles Il Fondamento, Ex Tempore, Ricercar Consort and La Pastorella. His solo recordings, and those made for Ricercar in particular, have been much praised by both the Belgian and international press. Guy Penson is piano accompanist at the Royal Conservatory and at the Kunsthumaniora in Ghent.
