Mendelssohn's Second Symphony is expression of his religious faith
and was certainly inspired by Beethoven's Ninth Symphony - especially
in that both works include vocal soloists and a choir in a large-scale
finale. Thus this work occupies a special place in Mendelssohn's oeuvre
as well as in the concert hall.
With this recording, Thomas Fey and the Heidelberger Sinfoniker
conclude their exploration of the complete Mendelssohn symphonies -
both the orchestral scores and the charming, early string symphonies.
Symphony No. 5, called "Lobgesang" by the composer, is a fitting and
grand conclusion to this project, released in celebration of
Mendelssohn's 200th Anniversary. Thomas Fey's recordings of the
Mendelssohn's complete symphonies reveal the composer
to be a passionate, energetic composer, embodying the true spirit of
early Romanticism. These recordings will inspire a second look at
