Sechs Lieder op. 6 (bearbeitet von Fabian Müller)
The works on this album are not only linked by the fact that all three are Swiss composers, but also by the fact that all of them have an engagement with folk music in their compositional endeavors.
Another very important aspect is the composer Fabian Müller, who is not only represented with his sonata and suite for cello and piano, but also took on the translation of the six Schoeck-songs into the version with cello instead of voice, making only minimal adjustments to the original. Finally, the playing is done by his wife, the cellist Pi-Chin Chien, together with the pianist Adrian Oetiker.
Müller and Schoeck are united by the use of a greatly expanded tonality, while Juon’s sonata remains committed to a neo-romantic style that impresses with its musical freshness.
Pi-Chin Chien is a very elegant artist who acts with a sonorous but always sensitive sound, and who structures fabrics rich in detail with her interpretations. With her approach, she offers interpretations that open up to enjoyment when listened to carefully and do not try to draw attention with effects.
Adrian Oetiker creates appropriately formulated piano passages that show their own positions and yet, in interaction with the cellist, pursue the harmoniously consensual path in direct musical coordination.
