Piano Sonata No. 9 in B Major, D. 575
In this fifth installment of Gerhard Oppitz’s recordings of the piano works of Franz Schubert, he has selected the “Grande Sonata“ in A Minor D 845. This large-scale work was composed in 1825, shortly after he had finished his String Quartet in D Minor, “Death and the Maiden.” The “Grand Sonata” was one of only three of Schubert’s Piano Sonatas that were published in his lifetime, and it became immediately popular with contemporary critics. The Sonata in B major D 575 dates from 1817 and despite the bright, B Major tonality is a stormy and eruptive work.
