Hans Pfitzner’s Violin Concerto in one movement exudes almost Mediterranean effortlessness; Siegfried Wagner‘s composition was described as a “symphonic poem with concertante violin” which is an apt summary of its lyrical character. Two Romantic works in the best sense of the term occupy centre stage in this new recording, although neither of the two composers can actually be counted among the shining figures of music history. Hans Pfitzner did not always hit the right note in his (cultural-) political comments and Siegfried Wagner never completely succeeded in emerging from the looming shadow of his father Richard; it is frequently overlooked that both composers nevertheless produced excellent music.
Juraj Cizmarovic performs these two concertos with equal mastery, augmented by "Träume” from Richard Wagner’s Wesendonck Lieder in the version for violin, and the WDR Rundfunkorchester Cologne and Marcus Bosch provide an excellent accompaniment to all three works.
