Spiritual sounds at the height of the Middle Ages The great mystic, Hildegard of Bingen (1098-1179) is one of the most important personalities in the religious life of the Middle Ages. She wrote many books about religion, ethics, cosmology and medicine, conducted an active correspondence, went on preaching tours and finally founded her own convent. "God's praise must be sung with joy" – Hildegard was soon no longer satisfied with the restrictive scope of Gregorian Chant, but composed separate hymns for her convent. The ensemble for early music augsburg places the hymns of Hildegard opposite the music of her time – such as a hymn by her famous "colleague" Peter Abelard (1079-1142) and sacred songs from the manuscript of S. Martial (12 c.) in Limoges.
