From its beginnings to the time of the Elector Ottheinrich, the court orchestra in Heidelberg consisted mainly, apart from a few instrumentalists, of a group of vocalist. Their primary task was to enrich the services held in the castle chapel; however , they also sang, and some of its members even composed, secular music for entertainment;. In his will, Ottheinrich, the well-known art patron among the Heidelberg Electors, was concerned about the continued existence of his Capell vnd Mvsica (choir and instrumentalists) in Heidelberg.
