In her moving autobiography "Ich sang um mein Leben", Judith Schneiderman narrates how she sang as a girl in a concentration camp in order to survive. Later she sang these songs to her daughter, opera singer Helene Schneiderman, during her early childhood. Then as Helene Schneiderman made her career far away from home in Germany, she was accompanied by a self-sung cassette of her mother as a connection to her family. The Yiddish songs, included on this CD, mean a lot to her and you can hear that from the first to the last track.

"Makh tsu di eygekekh is the first song I can remember from my childhood. On many nights my mother tucked me into bed with this song. She would repeat it lovingly and patiently to me until I could sing it on my own.[...] Already as a child I could sense that there was something mysterious and special about these songs, but not until I was much older could I truly understand the strength of these melodies and the power of their words. So much of what my parents experienced during the Holocaust and could not say in words, came through in their songs."
