The fourth of 13 children, Roland Marais (1680-1750) studied with his celebrated father, Marin Marais (1656-1728) alongside his musical brothers and sister. He became one of the leading viol players during the reign of Louis XV: second only to Jean-Baptiste Forqueray and alongside De Quay “le fils”. His Premier Livre de Pieces de Viole was published in 1735, the Deuxieme Livre three years later.
Roland Marais strictly follows the tradition of his father and writes exclusively in the French style. That being said, Marais achieves great variety within his chosen palette from the sighing Sarabande “La Verrieres” to the virtuosic “Le Barrengue” and the proud and whacky Allemande “La Vandercruisse, La Singuliere”. Marais uses a rich harmonic language and like his contemporaries favours a simple bass line which does not detract from the flamboyant solo part. Ensemble Tourbillon was founded in 1998 by Czech gambist and conductor Petr Wagner. The ensemble has appeared at numerous festivals and concert series in France, Italy, Germany, and Eastern Europe. The present recording marks the beginning of long-term cooperation between the ensemble and the label Accent.
