Haydn String Quartets Antology vol. 2

op. 9 no. 4, op. 64 no. 5 & op. 77 no. 1
String Quartets:
op. 9 no. 4, op. 64 no. 5 & op. 77 no. 1
No one should seriously doubt the supreme quality of Haydn's string quartets, and, as with the
symphonies, only much too small a selection of these works has been able to secure a regular
place in the ensemble repertoire and in the record catalogues. The present three-part anthology
from Haydn's string quartets should therefore reveal, with less well-known works, the importance
of Haydn's string quartet output, and enable interested music lovers to make some musical
discoveries, which otherwise were at best possible within the framework of infrequent complete
recordings of Haydn's individual string quartets.
The "new" Schuppanzigh Quartet was formed in 1996, the 200th anniversary of its historical
model – the string quartet founded in 1796 by Ignaz Schuppanzigh (1796-1830) – by musicians
who have all made a name for themselves in the field of historical performance practice. The
leader Anton Steck has been a Professor at the College of Music in Trossingen since April 2000,
and can be heard as a soloist in international festivals. In a short time the four musicians of the
Schuppanzigh Quartet have acquired a reputation as one of the leading string quartets using
original instruments, through exciting interpretations of the classic quartet literature as well as the
performance of interesting new discoveries.
