Songs express feelings. They speak of love and pain, of success or failure, express forms of protest, are “serious” or “entertaining”, popular or a pop-cultural phenomenon. In Italy, during the late Middle Ages and the Renaissance, the so-called “canzonieri” spread, which usually contain sonnets, cantons or ballads and, since they contain love in all its facets, are accompanied by notes. Michele Marco Rossi uses this literary-musical genre and presents in his “Canzoniere” eight pieces by Georges Aperghis, Noriko Baba, Francesco Filidei, Bernhard Gander, Filippo Perocco and Enno Poppe, which are inspired by the art form of song. However, these are songs in which not only the singing is in the foreground, but rather the tonal similarity of the cello and the human voice. The interaction between the virtuosity of the artist and the tonal diversity of the instrument is truly the result of “Now Music of the Future (Ivano Fossati)”.
