In 2014, Maria Jonas, Dominik Schneider, and Bassem Hawar met at the Cologne Center for Early Music and formed the ensemble Sanstierce. All three musicians are renowned specialists in modal music. With vocals by Jonas, Schneider on the flute and quinterna, and Hawar on the djoze, the group set out to bring life to the orally conveyed music of the Middle Ages. This is the group’s first CD, and the pieces chosen here are based on French medieval songs and Arabian classical music. The instrumentalists accompany the vocals in traditional fashion: with modal improvisations.
