Most of Robert Schumann‘s works for violin and orchestra were composed for the great violinist Joseph Joachim, who was also the composer’s friend.
In addition to these famous works the album contains arrangements for violin of some of Schumann's piano pieces: two were arranged by Ernst Rudorff (1840–1916), inspired by Joseph Joachim, and one was arranged by Joachim himself. These arrangements are not available on any other recording.
The booklet text is by the renowned Schumann scholar Joachim Draheim, who gives deep insight into the emergence of the works, including Draheim's own discovery of Schumann’s arrangement for violin of his Cello Concerto.
Dating from September/October 1853, the Concerto for Violin in D minor is Schumann’s last composition for orchestra. No other great work in music history has traded so many misunderstandings and secrets, nor been met with such a curious and complex reception. This recording is the first to use the reliable Urtext edition, which was published in 2009.
Recording: 25.–29.01.2010, Saarbrücken, Funkhaus Halberg. Lena Neudauer plays a violin by Lorenzo Guadagnini from 1743. Reedycja płyty H 93258.
