"It's fascinating to hear so many different composers express their love of trains in such varied ways... It's a fascinating and well played collection, though, and should appeal to anyone interested in the representation of railways in music. There's more than enough other material around for a return journey, too."

Spanning more than a century, this album's programme features a variety of works on the theme of railway: from idyllic to impressionistic, reflecting realism and social criticism, yet all cast in a classical mould – as in Hilding Rosenberg’s Railroad Fugue. The variety of forms and wealth of ideas in these compositions from France, Sweden, the USA, Brazil, Denmark, the Czech Republic, Austria, Switzerland and Germany surprised even the conductor on this album, Jiří Stárek, whose grandfather was a railroad worker!

Recording: 13.–14.10.2005; 29.11.–02.12.2005; 20./21.02.2006. Reedycja płyty H 93187.
