What Kind of Things do the King's Singers sing?
With this album, The King's Singers take us into one of the most popular and unique corners of their music library: the close harmony arrangements. It's a recording project that combines newly recorded material with highlights from the four volumes of their The Library EP series released over the past six years. The "Close Harmony" genre initially came about semi-accidentally: there was not enough classical repertoire immediately suitable for the original line-up of voices to fill an entire concert. The new combination of serious and light repertoire delighted the audience and quickly became a central part of their identity. The specific sound of these new arrangements gave the "Close Harmony" style its name: The voices often sing at close intervals, creating a fused, unified group sound that has become unmistakable since the pioneering work of their predecessors. The Kin g's Singers were the first British vocal group to perform with this range of genres and styles. The newer songs on this album reflect the cultural landscape in which the ensemble has moved since 2019. The selections were inspired by major musical biopics, groundbreaking new albums, projects rooted in the COVID pandemic, and other musical anniversaries. The King's Singers see it as their duty to reflect this cultural landscape and to honor and celebrate the wonderful arrangements from the group's early years. With this new Close Harmony album, the famous vocal ensemble takes the opportunity to tell the story of the group's rich heritage, focusing in particular on this magical, unique repertoire.
