Music as the heart of all arts, as a transcendence of language and pictorial representation – this concept developed in the Romantic period has inspired many composers and continues to have an effect today. René Kubelík and Patrizio Mazzola present a selection of musical gems that can be subsumed under the genre "Songs without Words". Works by seven female composers, including Ruth Dürrenmatt, Cécile Chaminade and Fanny Mendelssohn are juxtaposed with miniatures by four composers and together form a surprising kaleidoscope of works from the 19th and 20th centuries.
