These four composers, all little known outside their native country, played major roles in the Dutch musical scene in the 20th century. All four were profoundly affected by World War II – during the Luftwaffe raid on Rotterdam in 1940 most of Escher’s manuscripts were destroyed, and Voormolen’s Pastorale was premiered in that city the same year. Pijper’s Sonatas are delightful works that owe much to the sonatas of Debussy and Ravel.
