Halvdan Sivertsen: Nordaforr Varvisa
Two of Norway’s most eminent performing artists in their respective musical spheres classical singer Marianne Beate Kielland and jazz pianist Jan Gunnar Hoff create their own tonal universe with their recording “Terra Nova”. Here we have beautiful, singable music from the pen of Jan Gunnar Hoff, composed in a style that inclines toward something classical-sounding with its fine melodies and melodious improvisations. But we also find classics such as “Nordaforr Varvisa”, “Jerusalem” and “Barndomsminne fra Nordland. And there are texts of Knut Hamsun, William Blake, and others that touch us with their melancholy and their candor. With this release, the two performers live up to their reputations as remarkably versatile musicians, and the question also arises as to whether music must always be classified according to genre. Yet in the symbiosis between jazz and classical, a space emerges in which you can simply surrender to this lovely music without someone telling you where it belongs. Mezzo-soprano Marianne Beate Kielland is one of Norway’s most distinguished singers. She performs regularly with leading orchestras and conductors in Europe and Japan, and with her more than forty recordings she has established herself firmly in the international recording market. Pianist and composer Jan Gunnar Hoff has released a number of critically acclaimed recordings and written over 250 works. He is an active freelance musician who has performed throughout the world and won prizes as both performer and composer. Hoff is Professor at the Arctic University of Norway (Tromso) and the University of Agder. Recorded in Stamsund Church, Lofoten, 8-9 July 2016. Texts by: Knut Hamsun, Elias Blix, William Blake
