Of the few musicians who were so greatly acclaimed during their lifetime that they outshone their contemporaries, none have been so profoundly and unjustly forgotten as Georg Philipp Telemann: Romain Rolland pointed out a little over a century ago that posterity has paid dearly for Telemann’s insolent victory over Bach while alive; he added that Telemann’s music had been admired throughout Europe, from France to Russia, but that after his death it had been forgotten and disdained. This situation seems fortunately to have changed today, even if our knowledge of Telemann’s plethora of works remains fragmentary; Telemann, towards the end of his life, was no longer able to compile a list of the works he had written.
