Laetatus sum Magnificat Laudate, pueri Magnificat Laudate, pueri Qui Habitat Laudate Dominum Cum Invocarem Lamentationes
Rebelo was something of an outsider in the Portuguese musical world of his time, as the first half of the 17th century was characterised by the blossoming of traditional vocal polyphony according to the ‘strict’ model of Palestrina, chiefly represented by the sacred music of three important composers, Duarte Lobo (ca. 1565-1646), Manuel Cardoso (1566-1650) and Felipe de Magalhaes (ca. 1571- 1652). In contrast to Rebelo, they were strangers to the experimentation of the Early Baroque style. This phase of Portuguese music, which continues to be too little known, provides a good illustration of the intriguing juxtaposition of tradition and innovation in Western music at that time. MORE
