Mélanie Hélene Bonis (Mel Bonis) was born into a lower middle class family on 21 January 1858. A sensitive child, she received a strict religious upbringing and held herself faithfully to its precepts. One day she discovered the piano although the instrument was simply a piece of furniture as far as her family was concerned; her parents were not at all interested in music and there was no question of music lessons. A friend of the family was fortunately able to convince Mélanie’s parents that the child, now aged twelve, should be given piano lessons. She learnt quickly and was a competent player when she reached her eighteenth birthday. She was introduced to César Franck, who accepted her as a pupil and arranged a place for her at the Conservatoire de Paris; Debussy and Pierné were also students there at that time. She soon felt at home in this musical world. Her teachers said that she was greatly gifted and she excelled particularly in harmony and composition and she wanted to compose above all else. Whilst Mel Bonis’ music was performed infrequently during her lifetime, it was forgotten completely after her death. Over the last decades there has been an upsurge of interest in rarely played works; Trio Alouette hopes that this CD will contribute towards a more general recognition of the musical gems left us by Mélanie Bonis.
