This CD features no. 7 in D minor (c. 1821/1822), no. 9 in C major (1823) and no. 12 in G minor (1823). No. 7 is almost twice the length of the preceding symphonies. The second movement is annotated Andante amorevole, an expression mark that was still unusual in the early Romantic period.
The Bolzano String Academy was established in 1987 by the South Tyrolean Music Association under the artistic direction of Georg Egger. The string orchestra consists mainly of South Tyrolean musicians who have gained a wealth of experience in prominent chamber ensembles and orchestras at national and international level and pass on their experience in joint projects with budding young artists. The String Academy usually performs without a conductor. Some of the String Academy’s members also play in the Klassische Philharmonie Stuttgart, and this connection has led to collaboration with the conductor Frieder Bernius.
Frieder Bernius is most closely associated with the works of three composers who were honoured with the title of “court composer” by the Elector of Saxony and King of Poland, Augustus the Strong. The composer who ranked third at the time was Johann Sebastian Bach, with whom Bernius has been familiar since his youth. Even back then he was actively involved with Bach’s violin solo sonatas, organ works and oratorios. To this day, he is indebted to Bach for invitations to international festivals, CD awards and the City of Leipzig Bach Prize 2009.
Recordings: Lengmoos/Ritten, Vereinssaal Peter Mayr, July 22/23/26/27, 2006.
