hänssler CLASSIC is proud to the gifted, young cellist Valentin Radutiu. Born in Munich in 1986, Radutiu has studied with Heinrich Schiff in Vienna and since 2007 he has been a member of David Geringas' cello studio at the Hanns Eisler Academy of Music in Berlin. Radutiu has won several regional and international prizes, the most prestigious of which is the "Ton und Erklärung" music prize awarded by the Cultural Committee of German Business.
Though still in his 20s, the young Radutiu has already tackled a considerable range of repertoire from Bach to the World Premiere of a specially commissioned work by Avant Garde composer Peter Ruzicka.
For his debut recording for hänssler CLASSIC, Radutiu has chosen a program of French rarities and oddities, spanning the late Romantic and early 20th century. The earliest, Lalo's broadly scored Sonata in A Minor is all that one might
expect from a French Romantic chamber work - exquisite craftsmanship, finely shaped melodies and a certain reserve. Albéric Magnard's late sonata may be a new piece for many listeners, and upon hear it, one can only wonder at its neglect. Stylistically, Magnard approach is a stylistic fusion somewhere between Franck and Mahler - a soundscape ideally suited for the combination of cello and piano. The final work will also come as a surprise: Ravel's jazz-inspired Violin Sonata in an arrangement for cello!
