Helmuth Rilling's recordings of numerous large oratorios during the past few decades are anything but rare - not the least of which because of the work of his long-time ensemble and the many outstanding singers have made them the standard reference. The rarity of the works heard on this recording of C. P. E. Bach's Magnificat together with Johann Ludwig Bach's Missa brevis makes this a particularly valuable release.

On the occasion of the 300th birthday of C. P. E. Bach in 2014, this timeless recording of his popular Magnificat along with the Missa brevis of his distant relative Johann Ludwig Bach is available once more. C. P. E. Bach is regarded as an intermediary between the Baroque and Classical. His 1749 Magnificat deftly combines the sonic splendor of the Baroque in conjunction with a classical sense of form, so that arias written in his famous improvisatory "empfindsamen Stil" alternate with fugal choruses written in style of his father. This CD is complemented by the largely unknown Missa brevis by Johann Ludwig Bach; a treasure from the rich legacy of the extensive Bach family.
