Thomas Fey and his Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra are two-thirds of their way through their recordings of the complete Haydn symphonies. But each new release shows that Fey knows how to keep his interpretations of Haydn's varied masterpieces as fresh as his first disc, bringing the modern listener close to the boldness and beauty of Haydn's emotionally charged works. Although mindful of the findings of Historical Performance Practice, Fey uses "modern" string and woodwind instruments, while choosing to employ historical brass instruments. The balance he achieves corresponds perfectly to Haydn's ideas, far more than a homogenous ensemble of modern instruments.

Vol. 21 presents two works from the set of London Symphonies; Symphonies Nos. 99 and 100, together with the overture to the opera "L'incontro improvviso". And only in these works does Haydn add trumpets and timpani to his standard woodwind and horns, something that he never did before the London Symphonies. Just one more good reason to simply enjoy these opulent pieces as interpreted by the Heidelberg Symphony Orchestra.
