Siglo de Oro have collaborated with Dr Daniel Trocmé-Latter (University of Cambridge) to showcase works from this puzzling volume, setting motets by Nicolas Gombert, Jacquet of Mantua, Jacques Arcadelt and Adrian Willaert alongside less familiar names such as Simon Ferrariensis and the enigmatic Johannes Sarton. The resulting recording exhibits the combination of meticulous musicological research and finely crafted, sonorous singing that their previous Delphian albums have led us to expect.
Recorded on 7-9 January 2022 in St George’s Church, Chesterton, Cambridge.
Użyte w tytule słowo „mysterious”, a zatem tajemniczy, w pełni oddaje pochodzenie tego zbioru składającego się z 28 motetów sakralnych, z których 12 zostało wybranych do nagra-nia. Dlaczego pod koniec lat 30. XVI wieku mediolański kompozytor Hermann Matthias Wer-recore zebrał te utwory i przesłał je do wydawcy Petera Schoeffera w Strasburgu? Repertuar z katolickiego Mediolanu trafił do protestanckiego Strasburga, zyskując tym samym rangę uni-wersalną - międzywyznaniową. Obok motetów znanych kompozytorów, m.in. Willaerta, Gomberta czy Arcadelta możemy usłyszeć dzieła dziś nieznanych, jak m.in. Johannesa Sarto-na czy Simona Ferrariensisa. Dominująca w tej muzyce polifonia przeplata się z fragmentami homofonicznymi, co daje wykonawcom możliwości cieniowania tej muzyki. Drobiazgowe muzykologiczne badania połączone z precyzją wykonawczą wokalistów Siglo de Oro! Tytu-łowa tajemnica pozostała niewyjaśniona, ale muzyka ukryta w tych motetach, na szczęście, stała się słyszalną. Znakomite!
