Now he turns to the music of J. S. Bach, with three works whose obscure early performance history belies their status as repertoire staples for modern guitarists.
The musicological questions that have arisen over what instrument Bach intended for these works – questions encapsulated for Shibe by the phrase ‘pour la luth o cembal’, which appears in the composer’s hand at the head of the manuscript of the Prelude to bwv 998 – are here answered by the unshakeable assurance of Shibe’s performances.

Sean Shibe to szkocki gitarzysta, któremu równie przyjazna jest gitara klasyczna, jak i elektryczna. Zdobył wiele prestiżowych nagród, jak choćby w 2019 roku Gramophone Award w nowo utworzonej kategorii „Concept Album” za nagranie softLOUD. I ta nagroda dotyczy jego wykonawstwa na gitarze elektrycznej. Sean Shibe jest niezwykle wszechstronnym muzykiem. I nadszedł ten moment w jego karierze, aby odważnie zwrócić się w stronę muzyki Johanna Sebastiana Bacha. Zdecydował się podejść do niej bardzo indywidualnie. Wybrał utwory o nie do końca sprecyzowanej przez Bacha obsadzie, jak choćby widnieje to na kartach Preludium i Fugi Es-dur BWV 998, która została przeznaczona na lutnię lub klawesyn. Ponadto na płycie znalazły się Suita e-moll BWV 996 i Partita c-moll BWV 997, które są równie niejednoznaczne wykonawczo. Nie często gitarzyści podejmują się ich wykonania. Sean Shibe sięgnął zatem po muzykę Bacha nie ułatwiając sobie tego zadania. To ambitne wyzwanie. Wykonawczo nie pozostawił jednak wątpliwości. Pewność, intuicja, i wyczucie faktury i przestrzeni bachowskiej muzyki daje słuchaczowi niezwykły komfort.
