Kermit Poling writes in an individual style that hearkens best to the besty lyrical content of American composers such as Aaron Copland and Virgil Thomson. His music is beautifully crafted, and immediately accessible. The melodies here are stunningly beautiful. The Guitar Concerto was written for the guitarist on this recording, Giovanni De Chiaro. It is one of the greatest guitar concertos of the past 50 years. De Charo has made a career of playing highly accessible music, including his own arrangements of the works of, for example, Scott Joplin.
