Vivaldi’s Gloria is his best-known sacred work. Here it fittingly complements Bach’s joyful Magnificat. Polished singing and playing from soloists, The Sixteen and The Symphony of Harmony and Invention make this a disc that will please all lovers of this irrepressible music. Herein are two fine choral works from two masters of the Baroque era. Although famous today for his concertos Vivaldi composed a considerable quantity of church music, amongst which is this well-known Gloria. Its airy and direct elegance contrasts with the rich and sumptuous complexity of Bach’s Magnificat, one of only a handful of his compositions that use a Latin text. On this disc both pieces receive resounding performances.
