Edward Gregson is one of Britain’s most versatile composers, whose music has been performed, broadcast, and recorded worldwide. This is the third disc of Gregson’s music on Chandos. International Record Review commented on a previous release: ‘He speaks to a large audience, without sacrificing integrity. With such superb performances and sound… this is a release of vital, attractive and immensely likeable music.’ Gregson was brought up in a Salvationist family in which the brilliant sound of the brass band played an important role. The Trombone Concerto was a natural consequence of this musical experience. The soloist in the concerto is Peter Moore who at the age of twelve was the youngest contestant ever to win BBC’s Young Musician of the Year. A Song for Chris is a recent commission for cello and chamber orchestra, here featuring another Young Musician of the Year (2007), Guy Johnston. The disc is completed with Music for Chamber Orchestra and Two Pictures for String Orchestra. The BBC Concert Orchestra is conducted by Bramwell Tovey.
