Symphony in D
Suite No. 1 for Orchestra, Op. 1
Tema con Variaciones for Orchestra, Op. 2
The young Carrillo’s four-movement, 33-minute symphony dates from 1901 when he was a student of Jadassohn and Reinecke in Leipzig and follows all the expected forms with the expected influences of late German Romanticism (Schumann, Brahms, even Bruckner) with the only Latin elements a pasodoble in the scherzo but isn’t that a hint of Mexican folk music in the second subject of the first movement (or is just because we know we’re listening to a Mexican composer?). The 14-minute Theme and Variations are from Carrillo’s first year in Germany, 1899, and is also thoroughly Germanic except for the habanera in the sixth variation while the 16-minute, four-movement suite dates from 1896-99 in Mexico but is really just well-orchestrated salon music (Gavota, Andante religiosa, Valse and Final). Orquesta Sinfónica de San Luis Potosí; José Miramontes Zapata.
