At the turn from the 19th to the 20th century the interest of the composers for acappella choir music seemed to be weak. When composers like Mahler and Debussy ever wrote for choir, then only to include them into orchestra works. The acapella music of the 1920ies was influenced by the polyphonic tradition of the 16th century. But if you wanted to develop the choir music further, you had to put aside this tradition, as important as it was.

In the 1960ies Ligeti opened up new perspectives with his piece for choir Lux aeterna. Gottwald’s transcriptions refer to Ligeti’s work, by applying the technique of writing for voices, even on models of romantic impressionist era, it gives us ultimately better understanding of the contemporary choir music. The two CARUS CDs (see also: CAR 83370) offer a different view on Gottwald’s settings.
