Musica sacra Vol. IX:
Musica sacra Vol. IX:
The Mass in A minor op. 197 for mixed choir and organ is the last work that Josef Gabriel
Rheinberger began. The composer died while working on the composition and left only the Kyrie
and the Gloria completed. Rheinberger’s pupil, Louis Adolphe Coerne, newly composed the
Sanctus and Benedictus, and modeled the Agnus Dei on the Kyrie. The Credo was present in
Rheinberger’s sketches and could thus be reconstructed as the composer had intended. The
premiere recording of it has been released on the present recording.
Rheinberger’s church music oeuvre includes several series of motets with different scorings – the
Four Motets op. 133 for six-part choir (1881), the Five Hymns op. 107 for four-part choir
(composed mostly in 1877) and the Five Motets op. 163 for five-part choir (1881-1890). The
motets op. 133 represent a pinnacle in the composer’s oeuvre.
