Quartet for Oboe and Strings
The works brought together here reveal the composer Gordon Jacob from an unknown angle. In line with the typical British predilection for the oboe, we experience him here playing with traditions of musical gesture and form (Seven Bagatelles), as an expert on and lover of high-quality English literature (Six Shakespearian Sketches) programmatically and sensitively integrating original headings and fragments from Shakespeare's works into his music, and as a composer who always stood up for graspable melody (Quartet), never sacrificing it in favour of progress. Gordon Jacob is otherwise best known today as the creator of works for brass and woodwinds. His brilliant writing for wind ensemble and symphonic band is a true enrichment of this genre. Although Jacob left numerous other compositions, ranging from symphonies and solo concertos to diverse chamber music, he is otherwise hardly represented as a composer in today's concert life. The Ensemble Piů have set themselves the special task of rediscovering new and unknown works alongside the classical chamber music repertoire. The fixed quartet instrumentation is regularly expanded in order to make unusual instrumental combinations possible as well.
