Christoph Willibald Gluck’s Orfeo ed Euridice is an opera whose historical value is as great as its musical worth. It is in fact associated with an event, the so-called “Gluck reform” of Italian serious opera, for which Orfeo stands as a starting point: the event may have been overrated in its true importance and consequences but did possess great symbolic significance and has made the date of the first performance of the opera (Vienna, 5th October 1762) one of the key moments in the history of music in the eighteenth century.
This is a live recording of Orfeo ed Euridice, made in 1998 with the Orquesta Sinfónica de Galicia and the Coro de la Comunidad de Madrid under the artistic direction of Peter Maag. The great solists are Ewa Podles, Ana Rodrigo and Elena de la Merced.
Enjoy this opera on two Super Audio CDs which play in multichannel surround sound and two-channel stereo on all SACD players and which can also be played on a standard CD player though only in stereo.
