Beethoven‘s piano music appealed to his contemporaries: apart from the aristocracy, its supporters were found among the enlightened, educated middle class consisting of merchants, public servants and professional musicians. This group not only contributed to the development of burgeois musical life; it also constituted its public and enabled the rapid rise of the piano by engaging in the practice of Hausmusik.
