Arrangements for piano fourhands formed an important part of musical life at a time when there were no means of sound reproduction. At the beginning of the nineteenth century, the domestic piano with its newly expanded tonal range offered a way to recreate orchestral compositions that would not have been available otherwise, at first in the form of piano arrangements for four hands and later for two pianos as well. The number of piano transcriptions that were published in print quickly surpassed the number of original compositions for this combination. While some of the transcriptions were scored by the composers themselves or by their pupils, most were created by professional arrangers who worked for the publishing houses.
