To mark the 10th anniversary of the death of Canadian composer Jacques Hétu, ATMA Classique and Classica Festival present a new recording of the Piano Concerto No. 2 with pianist Jean-Philippe Sylvestre, and the Trombone Concerto with Alain Trudel as soloist and conductor of the Orchestre symphonique de Laval. This new album recorded at la Maison symphonique in Montréal also includes the symphonic poem Sur les rives du Saint-Maurice.
Jean-Philippe Sylvestre has recorded Mathieu’s piano concerto and chamber works, along with Rachmaninov’s piano concerto for ATMA Classique. Sylvestre is an acclaimed pianist whose honours include the prestigious Virginia Parker award, the first prize and people’s choice award of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra competition, the CBC National Competition for Young Performers, and the International Radio Competition for Young Musicians Concertino Praga.
Trombone virtuoso and conductor Alain Trudel was praised by La Presse for his “immense talent as conductor, musician, and performer.” Trudel has been artistic director of the Orchestre symphonique de Laval for 11 years. In 2017, he was named musical director of the Toledo Symphony in Ohio.
Founded in 1984, the Orchestre symphonique de Laval (OSL) is one of Laval’s main artistic organizations, with a roster of 53 professional musicians graduates of Quebec’s music conservatories and universities. For the last 30 years, the orchestra’s chief mandate is to offer audiences grand symphonic music and provide a pleasurable listening experience.
Recording: Maison symphonique, Montréal, August 2019, during the Festival Classica. Violin: Jean-Baptiste Vuillaume (Antoin Bareil); French luthier Charles-François Gand (1932) (Marie-Josée Arpin). Cello: Stradivarius “Kaiser” cello of 1706 (Marcil).
