Madonna tu me fai lo scorucciato
Villanella ch'all'acqua vai
Venimo a salutarte a 'sta contrata
'Sto core mio ne fosse di diamante
Madonna mia la vostra alma bellezza
Boccuccia dulce chiu che canamielle
Voccuccia de no pierseco apreturo
Madonna non piu lo tiempo antico
Chi la gagliarda, donne, vo imparare
Mentre il cuculo il suo cucu cantava
La villanella
Baciami, vita mia, baciami anchora
A quand'a quand'haveva una vicina
La cortesia voi donne predicate
S'io dormo aggio gran male
'St'amaro core mio e diventato Sto calascione che me metto 'nzino
Deh, quando ti veggio
O Vecchia tu che guardi
Vorria, Madonna, fareti sapere
A calascione
O Lucia miau, miau
Deh! La morte de mariteto
Vorria ca fosse ciaola
Villanella ch'all'acqua vai
Jesce sole
Madonna non e piu lo tiempo antico
Che sia maldicta l'acqua
Voria, crudel, tornare
Recercar secondo
Caccia la vecchia fuora del campo
Sto core mio se fosse di diamante
Tu sai che la cornacchia
Nuttata 'e sentimento
Beginning in the early decades of the sixteenth century, Naples made a distinct contribution to the Italian musical scene with a genre peculiarly its own, the Canzoni Villanesche alla Napoletana. These often amusing pieces are not to be thought of as "popular" music in any sense, but rather as music for a refined public, much of it poking fun at the madrigal and its mystique. However, the intervention of the villanella repertory of highly accomplished composers such as Willaert and Lassus, both of whom are represented in this well-chosen selection of pieces, had the effect of bringing the genre closer in some of its details to the language of the late sixteenth-century madrigal.

"The wide variety of styles on this present record is matched by intelligently varied combinations of voices and instruments; percussion and improvised instrumental parts have also been added to some pieces. The results are effective and make for enjoyable listening, [...] Marco Beasley is on superb form here." (Gramophone)
